"Immersive Training in Supportive Psychotherapy"
Course Director:Â Â Robert E. Feinstein, MD Professor of Clinical Psychiatry,Northwell/ZuckerÂ
Supportive psychotherapy is the most widely practiced form of individual psychotherapy across all mental health settings — yet it remains among the least formally taught. Clinicians working across outpatient, inpatient, primary care, and community settings deliver supportive interventions daily, often without a structured framework for what they are doing or why it works. This full-day immersive training directly addresses that gap, providing licensed clinicians with a comprehensive, clinically grounded introduction to the theory, assessment, and practice of supportive psychotherapy. The program moves sequentially through the complete arc of supportive treatment: from defining the model and conducting a targeted patient evaluation, through establishing a working alliance and treatment contract, to case formulation and evidence-informed intervention strategies. Two live supervision sessions — one before and one after lunch — give participants the opportunity to present their own cases and receive real-time expert feedback in a collaborative small-group format. The day is designed so that every concept taught in the morning is applied clinically by the afternoon.

Assessment & Treatment of Patients with Severe Personality Disorders
Course Director:Â Â Robert E. Feinstein, MD Professor of Clinical Psychiatry,Northwell/ZuckerÂ
Despite their high prevalence in clinical caseloads, severe personality disorders remain among the most undertreated conditions in mental health practice.Â
The program opens with a clinically rich examination of the difficult patient: how personality disorders are diagnosed, organized, and can be managed in clinical practice, brought to life through curated film illustration. Participants then move into the structural foundations of effective treatment—how to establish a treatment contract, diagnose levels of personality organization, and conduct sessions with patients. The first live supervision session, with participant case presentations, will focus on material presented in the morning. The afternoon focuses on disorder-specific strategies for Borderline and Narcissistic Personality Disorders before closing with a second live supervision session in which participants present their own complex cases for real-time expert feedback.

Integrated Expertise & New Insights
Dr. Feinstein’s 2022 release, Personality Disorders, published by Oxford University Press, offers clear guidance for understanding complex behavioral patterns. The book supports clinicians who want stronger, evidence-based tools in everyday practice.
This expertise also shapes his work with medical physicians. He helps Family Medicine and Internal Medicine groups integrate mental health services into their operations. The goal is stronger outcomes, lower costs, higher satisfaction, and a lighter workload for physicians. A structured consultation gives practices a clear plan for successful change.
